Liaoning show brings 230 works to Shenyang until 23 September 2026
Shenyang’s Industrial Museum of China has opened the “Fortune and Prosperity Across Mountains and Seas” Liaoning Gourd Art Exhibition, which runs through 23 September 2026.
The museum co-sponsors the exhibition with the Liaoning Folk Literature and Art Association. Tieling Folk Literature and Art Association organised the show.
Using the museum’s industrial setting, organisers present Liaoning’s work in gourd-related intangible cultural heritage, aesthetic education and craft innovation.
In Chinese culture, the gourd stands for good fortune, health and safety, family harmony and prosperity.
230 works show six techniques
Across the exhibition, visitors can see 230 works made with pyrography, carving, colour painting, filigree inlay, colour layering and embossing.
Many pieces draw on ancient craftsmanship and folk culture. At the same time, they use modern aesthetics and design.
As a result, the display shows how Liaoning’s folk crafts keep traditional methods alive while adopting newer artistic approaches.
Artists from across a wide range of styles are included, along with works by established provincial-level intangible cultural heritage inheritors.
Liaoning schools and inheritors feature strongly
A main highlight is Liaoning’s push to bring intangible cultural heritage into school education.
Instead of using a master-only display model, the exhibition invites broader public participation and supports skill sharing between generations.
According to museum officials, the works show the results of making intangible cultural heritage aesthetic education a regular and widely available practice in Liaoning.
Meanwhile, visitors have described the pairing of traditional gourd art and an industrial museum as a blend of old and new.
Museum builds Industry + Folklore events
Museum officials say the venue has long worked on intangible cultural heritage preservation and has built an “Industry + Folklore” cultural festival brand.
Regular programs at the museum include intangible cultural heritage performances, cultural bazaars and craft exhibitions.
Following the opening on 2 September 2026, the exhibition also serves as a showcase for Liaoning’s gourd craftsmanship and its efforts to link culture with tourism.
