<h2>MP Highlights Economic and Environmental Benefits</h2>
CANBERRA — Monique Ryan, MP for Kooyong, has urged the Albanese Government to maintain existing tax incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). This call comes as energy security concerns rise globally, with Ryan highlighting the importance of these incentives in promoting cleaner, cost-effective transport options.
Ryan’s comments follow the Treasurer’s suggestion of a review that could potentially remove the <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/fringe-benefits-tax/” title=”Fringe Benefits Tax” rel=”noopener”>Fringe Benefits Tax</a> (FBT) exemption for novated leases. According to Ryan, such a move would be a significant misstep in the current energy climate. “As oil and gas prices surge globally, now is the wrong time to wind back incentives for electric vehicles,” she stated.
The EV market in Australia has seen substantial growth, increasing from 3.8% in 2022 to 13.1% in <a href=”https://melbourne-insider.au/tag/2025/” title=”2025″ rel=”noopener”>2025</a>. Yet, EVs still only represent a small fraction of the country’s total vehicle fleet. Ryan argues that the FBT exemption has been pivotal, driving over 105,000 additional EV purchases since 2022.
Context of the EV Market
Australia’s Climate Change Authority estimates that half of all new cars need to be electric by 2035 to meet climate targets. Ryan highlighted that the FBT policy has yielded $2.25 in benefits for every dollar spent between 2022 and 2025. “The choice before the Government is not between spending and saving — it is between spending that accelerates the future we need, and spending that subsidises a past we can no longer afford,” she noted.
Ryan also called for capping the diesel fuel rebate and introducing a windfall tax on gas exporters’ super-profits to fund the clean energy transition. She emphasised the necessity of a fairer distribution of the national resources wealth.
