Largest Day-and-Night Festival in History

Commemorating 50 years, the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races will host the city’s largest festival from 19th June to 1st July 2026. Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the event transforms Victoria Harbour and the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade into a vibrant hub of racing, live entertainment, and cultural experiences over 13 days.

International races take place from 27th to 28th June, drawing over 220 teams from 16 countries and regions. This highlights the event’s evolution from its start in 1976 at Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter, where only 10 teams participated, into a global sporting phenomenon.

Cultural and Entertainment Highlights

Visitors will find traditional cultural workshops, VR dragon boat paddling, live music, and stage performances at the festival. Hong Kong street-food classics and complimentary beer are available at the Beer Garden. A 22-metre dragon boat display and themed photo spots enhance the festive atmosphere, reflecting the city’s unique blend of heritage and modernity.

Apart from Victoria Harbour, local races and cultural rituals will occur in neighborhoods like Stanley, Aberdeen, and Sai Kung. This event not only showcases competitive sports but also emphasises the cultural significance of dragon boat racing in Hong Kong’s history.

Originating from rituals by fishing communities, dragon boat racing in Hong Kong was once used to dispel bad luck and pray for peace and safety. The festival celebrates this rich heritage with a diverse program, including intangible cultural heritage workshops and modern highlights.

The Avenue of Stars and Salisbury Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui will be bustling with activities day and night. The festival spans multiple days, offering immersive experiences for visitors of all ages and interests.

Further details about the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races can be found on the official event website. This year’s event reinforces Hong Kong’s status as the Events Capital of Asia, combining rich cultural legacy with modern entertainment and sports.
