Supporter vigil planned before Canberra hearing
Supporters of filmmaker Juliet Lamont plan a vigil outside the ACT Magistrates Court in Canberra at 8:30am on Tuesday 4 August 2026, before her 9:30am court appearance over a rooftop protest at defence company Electro Optic Systems.
Media interviews are scheduled on the court steps at 8:45am and again at 1:00pm. Organisers say Lamont and supporters will be available at both times.
The prosecution relates to an action in July 2025, when Lamont and other campaigners occupied the roof of EOS. The protest targeted the company’s R400 weapons system.
According to campaigners, EOS shareholder reports and independent investigative journalism show the R400 had been trialled by the Israeli military. Campaigners also point to demonstrations alongside Israel Aerospace Industries.
Campaigners place those claims in the context of Gaza, which they and a growing body of international opinion describe as an ongoing genocide. They argue Lamont now faces prosecution for drawing attention to those links.
The Australian Government has repeatedly denied supplying weapons to Israel. However, campaigners maintain the public record shows a different picture.
ACT Magistrates Court schedule
Lamont is described in the media advisory as a filmmaker and a Global Sumud Flotilla leader. Ahead of the hearing, she stated: “Opposing genocide is not a crime. Selling the weapons that carry it out is.”
Her court appearance on 4 August 2026 comes months after a separate incident in international waters. Campaigners say Israeli forces seized her at gunpoint while she was trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Following that detention, Lamont gave testimony to the Australian Federal Police, Reuters and Novara Media. Her account also formed part of evidence submitted to the International Criminal Court.
In that evidence, Lamont alleged Israeli detention involved torture and rape. The Australian Federal Police later confirmed it is investigating allegations raised by Lamont and 10 other Australian flotilla participants.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong told Parliament she believed the flotilla participants. Meanwhile, campaigners argue blocking life-saving aid to a war zone is a war crime.
