Mamma Mia Musical Opens Limited Melbourne Season

Mamma Mia season runs at The National Theatre from 7th February 2026

The stage musical Mamma Mia opens a limited Melbourne season at The National Theatre in St Kilda from 7th February 2026. Melbourne independent company AG Theatre presents the production. As a result of its long-running international success, audiences worldwide have seen the musical more than 65 million times.

Set on a Greek island, the musical follows a 20-year-old woman, Sophie, as she searches for the identity of her father. Ahead of her wedding, she invites three men from her mother Donna’s past. Consequently, their arrival disrupts preparations and reopens unresolved relationships.

The story unfolds through a soundtrack built around well-known ABBA songs. In turn, these songs drive a narrative centred on family, friendship and identity. Throughout the production, the ensemble and choreography carry the performance.

Global success and creative leadership

The production features twenty-two songs from the ABBA catalogue. These include Dancing Queen, Voulez Vous, Mamma Mia, S.O.S and Take a Chance On Me. As such, the score integrates directly into the storyline.

Director Pip Mushin said, “Mamma Mia! is a reminder of how powerful musical theatre can be joyful, generous and bursting with heart! This production is big on energy, strong on dance, and all about giving audiences a night where our powerhouse cast ignites the spark and ABBA does the rest!”

Mamma Mia premiered in London’s West End in 1999. Since then, producers have staged the musical in more than 40 countries across five continents. Moreover, the production features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with a book by Catherine Johnson.

Phyllida Lloyd directed the original production, while Anthony van Laast created the choreography. Subsequently, filmmakers released a screen adaptation in 2008. Later, a sequel followed in 2018.

Executive Producer Andrew Gyopar said, “Mamma Mia is pure joy. It’s the kind of show that reminds you why people fall in love with live theatre in the first place. It’s funny, it’s energetic, it’s full of heart, and it’s two and a half hours of escapism and feel good music.” Additionally, he said the production highlights Melbourne-based performers and creatives.
