Back Glass Damage Tops Insurance Claims

Mobile phone damage costs have surged by up to 40% in recent years, with Bupa launching a new insurance product to cover both mobile phones and certain cyber risks in Australia.

A recent analysis by Bupa highlights that damage to the back glass of mobile phones is the most common issue, followed by problems such as display bleed, unresponsive touchscreens, and cracked front screens.

With over 90% of Australians relying on mobile phones for daily activities, including communication and banking, the financial impact of phone damage or loss is substantial. Cybercrime is also on the rise, with a cyber incident reported every six minutes, costing an average of $33,000 according to Australian authorities.

Bupa’s new insurance product aims to address these concerns by offering combined coverage for mobile phones and cyber risks, such as identity theft. This initiative acknowledges the increasing reliance on smartphones in modern life.

Madeleine Young, Bupa’s General Manager of Product Proposition and Loyalty, stated, “Phone repair and replacement costs have risen sharply, with screen repairs now costing hundreds of dollars and popular phones costing thousands to replace. At the same time, cybercrime and scams continue to increase, leaving many Australians financially exposed.”

Understanding the Coverage Options

Unlike other phone insurance options, Bupa’s product is not tied to the purchase of a new phone and does not require long-term contracts. It covers both new and existing phones, including accidental damage outside the home.

Customers can choose to insure a single phone with added cyber cover for $19.99 per month, or insure up to four phones under a household policy for $49.99 per month. The policy also includes protection against online fraud and offers financial reimbursement for stolen funds.

Ms Young emphasised the importance of taking precautions to protect digital identities, saying, “Your digital ID is just as valuable as your wallet. Simple steps like using strong passwords and staying alert to scams can help protect yourself.”

Bupa’s insurance product is available now, providing Australians with an option to protect both their mobile devices and their digital presence amid rising costs and risks.
