Lifetime Achievement and Emerging Leader Awards
Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) researchers were celebrated at the 15th Annual Heavy Haul Rail Conference. They received prestigious accolades at the 2026 Australian Heavy Haul Rail Awards.
Professor Ravi Ravitharan, Director of Monash IRT, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his extensive contributions to the railway industry in Australia and internationally. His career, spanning over 35 years, has been marked by significant advancements in railway technology and policy.
Professor Ravitharan led ground-breaking research and innovation in modernised railways. He set benchmarks for excellence through technical advancements and influenced national strategies. His efforts have fostered collaborations between academia, industry, and government.
Professor Robyn Ward AM, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) at Monash University, highlighted the impact of the institute’s work. She said, “Through its world-leading research and strong industry partnerships, Monash’s Institute of Railway Technology is advancing safer, more efficient and more sustainable freight and passenger rail networks.”
Leadership in Railway Innovation
Dr Siva Naidoo, Team Leader of Instrumentation and Monitoring Systems at Monash IRT, was recognised as the Emerging Leader of the Year. This award acknowledges his leadership, technical expertise, and innovative solutions to heavy haul rail challenges.
According to Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the awards underscore the institute’s role in advancing railway research and innovation globally. He remarked, “Australian heavy haul railways are the global benchmark for heavy haul operations.”
Researchers Darren Tan and Sushanti Prasad Oli earned Next Generation Conference Scholarships. These scholarships will enable them to attend the event and further develop their careers in railway engineering.
Monash IRT supports various federal and state government initiatives, including the National Rail Action Plan and the High Speed Rail initiative, reinforcing its leadership in railway technology research.
Professor Ventikos emphasised that these awards highlight the scale of Monash IRT’s contribution to the railway industry. He stated, “Through sustained strategic research leadership and extensive railway subject matter expertise, Monash IRT is helping Australian heavy haul railways enhance the resilience of their critical rail infrastructure.”
