Funding Targets Long-term Support Plans
A historic $184 million investment in domestic and family violence programmes has been announced by the New South Wales Government as part of its 2026-27 State Budget. This funding aims to enhance long-term support for victim-survivors across the state.
Men’s Behaviour Change programmes will receive $19.3 million, targeting the reduction and prevention of violent behaviour. These initiatives are expected to provide substantial support in reducing domestic violence incidents.
Elfa Moraitakis, CEO of SydWest Multicultural Services, stated, “The government’s work to move key domestic and family violence programmes to longer-term contracts provides greater certainty for service providers and continuity of care for victim-survivors.”
Support for Diverse Communities
Western Sydney’s diverse population necessitates culturally responsive care in the allocation of these funds. Moraitakis stressed the need for targeted support for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Healthcare and education infrastructure will also benefit from this budget. Additional hospital beds in Blacktown and Mount Druitt, along with the construction of 10 new public schools in Western Sydney, are part of the broader strategy to support the region.
The Thriving Kids programme introduces $631.9 million to support children with autism under the age of nine, who are being moved off the NDIS. This initiative aims to provide reassurance to parents and carers concerned about their children’s support needs.
Moraitakis added, “It is pleasing to see the NSW Government listening to the immediate financial pressures and challenges facing our community. However, as an organisation dedicated to supporting a diverse population and community, we must ensure that culturally responsive care is deeply embedded and deliberately planned across all new investments.”
Recruitment of allied health workers is among the additional investments, set to significantly improve healthcare services in the region. The commitment to build new public schools underscores the importance placed on education.
