Vinted enters its 27th market as Australian second-hand selling rises

Vinted will launch in Australia on 1st July 2026, making the country the European second-hand marketplace’s 27th market.

The platform allows people to buy and sell second-hand fashion and other goods. Its Australian launch will place the business into a fast-growing recommerce market, which is estimated to reach USD 6.75 billion by 2029.

The move also comes as second-hand buying and selling becomes routine for many Australians. New research commissioned by Vinted found 91% of Australians have bought or sold second-hand, while 52% of sellers listed more items in the past year than the year before.

In Victoria, the figure is slightly higher. The research found 93% of residents have bought or sold second-hand, with three in five selling more items in the past year than the previous year.

Decluttering leads to data

While cost-of-living pressure remains part of the second-hand market, Vinted’s research suggests it is not the main reason people are selling.

Across Australia, 67% of sellers said decluttering was their main reason for selling. That was ahead of cost-of-living pressure at 42% and the need to earn more money at 31%.

The Victorian figures were similar. In the state, 67% nominated decluttering as their main reason to sell, compared with 49% citing cost-of-living pressure and 31% citing the need to earn more money.

The research also found 88% of Australians have items at home they could sell. Nearly one in eight believe those items are worth more than $1,000.

Clothing appears to be a major part of the issue. Vinted’s research found 60% of Australians have clothes they do not wear taking up space, while 30% still have clothes with tags on. More than half said they keep items for a future occasion, while others pointed to not getting around to clearing items out or weight changes.

The buying side is also shifting beyond price. Nearly three in ten pre-loved clothing buyers said they enjoy the search as a hobby. More than a quarter said they buy second-hand to find items that reflect their personal style.

Adam Jay, CEO of Vinted Marketplace, said the Australian launch would give people a simpler way to trade unused items.

“We’re on a mission to make second-hand the first choice. In Europe we have already changed how people shop, by making it easy, reliable and affordable to choose second-hand. We’re excited to launch in Australia and offer an easier way to buy and sell between peers. Vinted exists to give unused items a second or even third life, and there’s a wealth of incredible items sitting in Australian homes right now.”

Vinted said its European members saved a collective €21.6 billion in 2025 by choosing second-hand fashion over new. The platform also posted €10.8 billion in gross merchandise value that year, up 47% year-on-year.

In Australia, Vinted will work with Australia Post for parcel drop-off and collection. Payment and shipping will be handled through the app, with sellers receiving a prepaid shipping label after an item sells.

Sellers will pay no selling fees. Buyers will pay a Buyer Protection fee, which covers support if an item is lost, damaged in transit or significantly not as described.
