Investment Targets Roads and Housing

On May 5th, the Northern Territory Government announced a $4.25 billion budget for 202627, reinforcing its commitment to infrastructure. This budget supports investments in roads, housing, community infrastructure, and economic development.

Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) welcomed this continued investment, highlighting the crucial role of heavy construction materials in meeting the Territory’s economic and community priorities.

Recent analysis by Oxford Economics shows that the cement, concrete, and aggregates industry contributes $122.1 million to the Northern Territory economy and supports 451 jobs. This sector is essential for construction activity and economic growth in the region.

Michael Kilgariff, CEO of CCAA, stated, “While the overall infrastructure programme has stabilised slightly, the scale of committed works remains significant and continues to drive strong demand for construction materials across the Territory.”

Transport and Housing Focus

The budget includes substantial investments in transport infrastructure, remote housing, and economic enabling projects. These investments align with key demand drivers across the Territory, including regional infrastructure upgrades, defence investment, and resource development.

Ensuring a resilient materials supply chain is crucial for timely and budget-effective project delivery. Kilgariff remarked, “The Territory presents unique delivery challenges, including distance, climate, and dispersed demand. A strong and resilient materials supply chain is essential.”

CCAA is eager to collaborate with the Northern Territory Government to support the infrastructure pipeline and promote long-term economic growth. The budget underscores a strong and sustained pipeline of work in the region.

According to Kilgariff, “Infrastructure projects are critical for the Territory, impacting not only construction but also overall economic development. The $4.25 billion programme includes significant allocations for roads and housing, aiming to address current needs and future demands.”

The Northern Territory’s unique challenges, such as vast distances and varied climate conditions, make reliable access to construction materials even more vital. CCAA’s role in ensuring this access highlights the industry’s significance to the Territory’s growth.

CCAA represents an industry contributing $20.7 billion to GDP and supporting 112,970 jobs nationwide, underscoring its national importance. the infrastructure program’s support for roads, housing, and economic development aligns with both immediate and long-term community needs.
