Sydney's busiest bike link hit the milestone after opening in July 2025
More than one million bike trips have been logged on Sydney’s Oxford Street west separated cycleway less than a year after it opened in July 2025.
The 1km route links Castlereagh Street and Taylor Square. It is now the City of Sydney’s most-used cycleway and connects dedicated bike lanes on Castlereagh, Liverpool, College and Bourke streets.
City data shows the millionth ride took place during the afternoon commuter peak on 1 July 2026. Before the upgrade, Oxford Street had the highest number of reported bike crashes of any street in the council area.
The City of Sydney and the NSW Government funded the project. Crews also improved crossings at four side streets and upgraded signals at nine intersections.
Trips are counted with a piezoelectric strip that sends a signal when a bike passes over it. The cycleway has recorded as many as 4,842 trips in one day.
Over the past three months, riders made an average of 3,490 trips a day. Meanwhile, weekday trips rose from 2,373 in September to 4,063 in April.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the rapid growth showed strong demand for a transport option that is safe, cheap and active.
Taylor Square to Centennial Park
Moore urged the NSW Government to complete the Oxford Street east cycleway between Taylor Square and Centennial Park. That section would fill a missing link between Bondi Junction and the city centre.
She argued the west cycleway has also made the street safer for pedestrians by moving riders off the footpath. It also creates a buffer from traffic near cafes, restaurants and local businesses.
“A million bike trips in less than 12 months reflects the community’s desire for a viable transport option that is safe, cheap and encourages active lifestyles,” Moore said.
Moore warned riders still face danger where the protected lane ends east of Taylor Square and merges back into general traffic. She argued a continuous separated route would calm traffic and ease pressure on roads and public transport.
