EPA Highlights Environmental Concerns
BROKEN HILL — Perilya Broken Hill Ltd has received a dust pollution notice and been fined $30,000 by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for inadequate dust management at its Southern Operations mine. The penalty was imposed following an inspection in November 2025, where visible dust was observed across the site, according to the EPA.
EPA Highlights Environmental Concerns
The EPA has been working with Perilya to address environmental issues at the Southern Operations mine. Since May 2020, Perilya has been part of an environmental improvement programme aimed at enhancing air quality and other environmental controls. This follows a pattern of increasing regulatory scrutiny on mining operations globally due to environmental impacts.
Perilya operates two mines on the Line of Lode, one of the world’s largest ore bodies. The other mine, Rasp, is managed by Broken Hill Mines Limited. The notice serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in balancing industrial activities with environmental stewardship. Mining companies worldwide are under increasing pressure to minimise their ecological footprint and ensure sustainable practices.
Efforts are underway to implement comprehensive dust control measures at the Southern Operations site to prevent future breaches. The EPA’s actions highlight the critical need for mining companies to adhere to environmental regulations strictly. Perilya has expressed its commitment to resolving these issues and collaborating with authorities to ensure compliance and safeguard the surrounding community’s health.
