Gas Industry Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over Climate Impact

PERTH — Cyclone Narelle has forced shutdowns at major gas export plants in Western Australia, highlighting the sector’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. The Gorgon, North West Shelf, and Wheatstone facilities have ceased operations as the cyclone, a category four storm, lashes the coast, according to industry reports.

The closures occur amid a global fuel crisis, emphasizing the need for dependable energy solutions. Piper Rollins, Climate and Energy Exports campaigner at the Australian Conservation Foundation, noted the increasing frequency of such weather events, which are exacerbated by climate change linked to fossil fuel emissions.

Industry Vulnerability and Climate Challenges

Rollins stated, “The current situation paints a bleak picture—extreme weather combined with global insecurity shows how risky and vulnerable the Australian gas export industry is.” She added, “Australians are on the frontline of the climate crisis and Big Gas is a major problem.”
