CANBERRA — The Department of the House of Representatives has announced the selection of 150 secondary school students to participate in Australia’s National Youth Parliament 2026. The announcement was made in partnership with Y Australia, with significant involvement from the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick MP. The event is set to take place at Parliament House starting Monday, March 30.
According to a statement from the Department, the programme will offer students an immersive experience in the democratic process, including simulated debates and workshops with political leaders. Alexandra Ash, CEO of Y Australia, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This initiative empowers young Australians to engage actively with our parliamentary system.”
The National Youth Parliament aims to deepen students’ understanding of legislative procedures, with participants representing each of Australia’s federal electorates. The five-day event will also involve visits to the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.
Programme Details and Educational Impact
The event will feature a series of interactive sessions designed to inspire and educate the students. They will have the chance to engage with sitting Members of Parliament, gaining insights into the challenges and responsibilities of political leadership. the programme includes a focus on developing public speaking and critical thinking skills, essential for future leaders.
By participating in the National Youth Parliament, students will not only witness but also partake in the creation of mock legislation, giving them a practical understanding of how laws are formed and debated. This experience aims to foster a generation of informed citizens who are aware of the intricacies of governance and eager to contribute positively to society.
