Australia’s dedication to refugee resettlement is paying dividends, as many former refugees help new arrivals. This trend becomes evident during Refugee Week, celebrating the nation’s achievements in offering sanctuary.

With the permanent resettlement of one million refugees since 1947, Australia demonstrates a longstanding commitment to humanitarian efforts. This milestone aligns with the start of Refugee Week.

Settlement Services International (SSI) has played a crucial role in these efforts. Over 25 years, SSI has settled 25,000 people through the government’s Humanitarian Settlement programme, assisting about 4,000 refugees each year.

Tamara Sabri, originally from Iraq, is now part of SSI’s staff. Her journey from refugee to welcomer began when her family fled Iraq due to threats against her father, a newspaper illustrator. Upon arrival in Australia, they were warmly greeted by an SSI staff member speaking Arabic.

“I still remember the warmth of the airport staff. It felt like being welcomed by family. In that moment, the fear lifted. I realised we weren’t alone,” Sabri recalled about her first day in Australia.

Recognising Refugee Contributions

According to Violet Roumeliotis, CEO of SSI, refugees should be recognised for more than their initial struggles. “We see people defined by the moment they escape war or persecution, rather than everything that comes after. Being a refugee is not someone’s whole story. It’s a moment in time,” she said.

The Assistant Secretary of the Settlement Branch of the Department of Home Affairs stated, “Australia has a long, proud and generous tradition of resettling refugees and vulnerable people in humanitarian need. Refugees have brought vibrancy to our cities, suburbs and towns through their economic and social contribution that has shaped the Australia that we know today.”

SSI boasts a diverse workforce, with 71% born outside Australia, representing 76 countries and speaking over 42 languages. This diversity enriches the support they provide to newcomers.
