Addressing Nutritional Challenges for Older Australians

During Men’s Health Week, from 15th to 21st June, health experts emphasise the importance of good nutrition for older Australian men to maintain independence and quality of life.

Research indicates that up to 50% of older Australians, whether living in the community or in residential care, suffer from malnutrition or unintended weight loss, adversely affecting their strength, mobility, and overall well-being.

Ashleigh Jones, Senior Dietitian at Lite n’ Easy, highlights that good nutrition is essential for healthy ageing, supporting muscle strength, energy, and overall wellness. She states, “Good nutrition is one of the most important foundations for healthy ageing. It helps support muscle strength, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.”

Understanding Nutritional Challenges

Malnutrition often arises due to appetite changes, shopping difficulties, or meal preparation becoming overwhelming. Ms Jones suggests that consuming a variety of protein-rich foods, vegetables, and whole grains is crucial for maintaining strong bones and muscles.

For individuals like Ian, 75, from South Australia, focusing on nutrition became critical after a diabetes diagnosis. “I knew I had to make a change for my health,” Ian shared. John, 91, also found nutrition challenging after his wife’s passing, but having meals readily available allows him to preserve his routine.

Ms Jones remarks, “Many older Australians are surprised to learn that support may be available through the Commonwealth Government’s Support at Home programme to help eligible participants access meal services.” Lite n’ Easy participates in this programme, providing subsidised meals designed to promote healthy ageing.

According to the Commonwealth Government’s Support at Home programme, eligible participants can access subsidised meal services, which help older Australians maintain their health, wellbeing, and independence. Raising awareness of these programmes is crucial for community support.

The importance of good nutrition for older Australians is not only about maintaining physical health but also about ensuring mental and emotional well-being. As Ms Jones said, “Good food is one of life’s pleasures and should not be compromised as we get older.”
