Leaders Address Global Challenges and Offer Hope
SYDNEY — Australian church leaders have shared their Easter 2026 messages, focusing on themes of hope and renewal amid global turmoil. Leaders from thirteen denominations, including the Anglican, Catholic, and Greek Orthodox Churches, emphasised the significance of the Resurrection in today’s challenging times according to the National Council of Churches in Australia.
Rev John Gilmore, President of the National Council of Churches in Australia, highlighted the importance of finding hope in the presence of the Risen Christ in all circumstances. This sentiment was echoed by Archbishop Tim Costelloe of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, who urged communities to embody peace and mercy. He reminded the faithful that Easter serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring love and sacrifice that Jesus represents, encouraging them to reach out to those in need during these times.
Messages from Diverse Denominations
Church leaders addressed recent global events, including conflicts and rising social issues, reminding followers that Easter’s message of resurrection offers a path to optimism. His Eminence Metropolitan Basilios of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese emphasised the communal calling of the Resurrection, while Bishop Milton PK Nee of the Chinese Methodist Church reaffirmed the historical truth of Jesus’s resurrection. They called on their congregations to unite in prayer and action, fostering a spirit of community and support.
The messages also reflected on local challenges such as Aboriginal deaths in custody and violence against women. Leaders urged believers to live by the principles of forgiveness and reconciliation, as noted by Rev Charissa Suli of the Uniting Church in Australia. The statements collectively called for reflection and action inspired by faith during this Easter season. the leaders emphasised the importance of looking beyond the immediate challenges, focusing on long-term solutions and the role of the church in guiding these efforts. They encouraged individuals to actively participate in community-building activities, promote understanding, and work towards justice and equality for all.
