Solidarity with Queensland Workers

Activists Sonya Rockhouse and Anna Osborne, known for their work following the Pike River mining tragedy, will bring their message of solidarity to Queensland workers at the Mackay May Day rally on Monday, May 4. They aim to support workers facing reductions in safety measures.

Remembering Pike River Tragedy

In 2010, the Pike River mining disaster in New Zealand resulted in the loss of 29 lives. Sonya Rockhouse lost her son Ben in this tragedy, while another son, Daniel, survived and currently works in Queensland’s mining industry. Anna Osborne’s husband, Milton, was also among those who perished.

Since the disaster, Rockhouse and Osborne have led the Stand with Pike campaign, advocating for justice for affected families and pushing for improved safety standards in workplaces. This movement has become a significant force in highlighting the importance of maintaining strong safety protocols in the mining sector.

The Mackay May Day rally, starting at 10am in Queens Park, will feature speeches from both Rockhouse and Osborne. Mitch Hughes, President of the Mining and Energy Union Queensland, will also address the crowd. Together, they aim to emphasise the critical need for robust safety measures in the mining industry.

On Tuesday, May 5, there will be a preview screening of the Pike River movie at 6pm at BCC Cinemas Mackay. This screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Rockhouse and Osborne. The film, which depicts the events of the disaster, is set to be released in Australia on May 14.

The movie highlights the human cost of insufficient safety measures and pays tribute to those who died in the disaster. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing necessity for vigilance in workplace safety.

For those interested in interviews or attending the movie screening, contact details have been provided by the organizers. The continuous efforts of these activists resonate deeply with workers and safety advocates throughout Australia.
