Rally to Highlight Pay Disparities

Community preschool teachers will gather at Martin Place in Sydney on 6th May, demanding the NSW government to provide fair pay rises. The event will start at 9:30 am, with a large turnout expected.n

The Independent Education Union is organizing the rally to pressure the government to address pay disparities before the June budget announcement. NSW politicians, union leaders, including Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey, will attend to show support.n

Hundreds of educators, parents, and supporters, dressed in bright pink, will advocate for a 15% pay increase for preschool staff. This rally follows two years of calls for government action on pay.n

David Towson, Acting Secretary of the IEUA NSW/ACT Branch, emphasised, “Preschool teachers and educators need the NSW government to boost funding for community preschools in the June budget so they can be paid fairly for providing high-quality education.” The IEU represents over 32,000 teachers and support staff.n

Addressing Pay Inequityn

The call for increased funding follows a Fair Work Commission recommendation in February for the NSW government to enhance support for community preschools. The FWC’s recommendation aims to address acute staff shortages caused by inadequate pay and conditions.n

Preschool staff currently earn up to 30% less annually than their school counterparts with similar qualifications, and 15% less than those in long day care centers, according to the IEU. This pay disparity highlights a systemic, gender-based undervaluation of this highly feminised workforce.n

Community preschools are exclusively funded by the NSW government and parent fees, without federal support. The IEU warns that without increased funding, preschools may face enrolment caps or fee hikes. Volunteer committees of parents run these preschools, prioritizing children’s education and safety.n

After months of negotiations, the NSW government has yet to commit to a funding increase. Without this commitment, community preschools may be forced to cap enrolments or increase fees due to staff shortages. “The umpire has spoken – we urge the NSW government to listen to the FWC’s recommendation,” Towson said.n

This rally not only highlights the pay disparities but also the essential role community preschools play in providing early childhood education. In a cost-of-living crisis, it is crucial to avoid fee increases that would burden families further.
