Rogue Rabbit Opens In Northcote With A Twist On Breakfast

Mortadella-stuffed French toast, seasonal bronuts and a planned 30-metre mural feature at the new café from the team behind Down the Rabbit Hole.

Rogue Rabbit opened just off Northcote’s High Street on Monday 28th September, with savoury stuffed French toast, brioche-doughnut bronuts and a weekly Omelette Tuesdays offering.

The new café comes from hospitality operators John Scardamaglia, Matt Smith and Joe Mansour, who opened Down the Rabbit Hole in Templestowe in 2017. Their Northcote venue seats around 50 guests indoors and out.

Mortadella French Toast And Four-Day Bronuts

French toast takes a savoury turn at Rogue Rabbit, stuffed with mortadella, stracciatella and pistachio. Elsewhere on the breakfast menu, diners will find steak and eggs, alongside vegetarian and vegan options.

Tuesday has its own offering: Omelette Tuesdays.

For something sweet, Smith’s bronuts combine a classic doughnut with brioche. The process takes approximately four days from dough to finished product, following more than a decade of development at Down the Rabbit Hole.

Smith, a 30-year hospitality veteran, is bringing the creation to Northcote with seasonally rotating flavours. Some varieties will be exclusive to Rogue Rabbit.

The coffee menu centres on the team’s established house blend, with a greater focus on cold coffee creations and rotating batch brews.

A New Neighbourhood For The Templestowe Team

Rogue Rabbit draws on the trio’s experience at Down the Rabbit Hole, while taking its own direction in Northcote. Scardamaglia said the neighbourhood’s character was part of the appeal.

“Northcote has such a diverse and creative community, and we think it’s the perfect place for it,” Scardamaglia said.

The approximately 100-square-metre interior combines exposed brick, stone, metal and fluted glass with vintage-inspired furniture.

Beyond the menu, the team is exploring making used coffee pucks available for locals to take home for their gardens.

Outside, Melbourne artist Danielle Webber has been commissioned to create a mural spanning approximately 30 metres of the building. The planned artwork will combine spray paint and brushwork and be visible from High Street and the surrounding laneway.
