Saturday Night Fever Brings Disco Energy to Melbourne’s Stage
Melbourne’s theatre calendar adds another major highlight this week as Saturday Night Fever arrives at the Athenaeum Theatre. Performances begin on Thursday, 8th January 2026, ahead of opening night on Saturday 10th January, bringing the iconic disco-era story back to the stage in a bold new production.
Produced by Drew Anthony Creative, the award-winning show follows a successful Perth season in 2024. That production received BroadwayWorld Australia awards for Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, and Best Performer. As a result, expectations are high for its Melbourne debut.
Originally inspired by the 1977 film, Saturday Night Fever remains one of the most recognisable stories in popular culture. Its soundtrack, powered by the Bee Gees, won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 45 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the stage adaptation continues to attract new audiences by reworking the narrative through a contemporary lens.
Saturday Night Fever Brings a Bold New Vision to the Stage
This reimagined production stays true to the spirit of the original while sharpening its focus on character and setting. Director Drew Anthony presents a gritty interpretation that leans into themes of escapism, ambition, and working-class identity. In addition, the story explores how music and movement become lifelines for those seeking more from life.
At the centre of the production is Tony Manero, portrayed by Ethan Churchill. After earning the Best Performer award during the Perth season, Churchill returns to the role with renewed momentum. His performance anchors the show’s emotional core while delivering the physical intensity the role demands.
Alongside Churchill is a strong Australian cast, including George Kapiniaris, known for Acropolis Now and Underbelly, and Chelsea Plumley, whose musical theatre credits include Hairspray and Mary Poppins. Australian dance star Sophia Katos, recognised for Strictly Ballroom, also joins the cast.
