First Aid Experts Emphasise Emergency Steps

Surf Life Saving NSW is leading a new initiative, installing shark bite trauma kits at 129 beaches throughout New South Wales. These kits aim to provide immediate assistance during shark attacks. First aid experts are praising this move, emphasizing the critical nature of quick and effective responses.

Facilitated by Surf Life Saving NSW, the kits contain essential first aid items like tourniquets, compression bandages, and wound dressings. These items are vital for controlling severe bleeding before emergency services can arrive.

Samuel Bohr, Director of National First Aid Courses, stated, “When it comes to traumatic injuries like shark bites, the first few minutes are critical.” He stressed the importance of accessible first aid knowledge and equipment in high-risk environments.

Although shark attacks remain rare, the skills and equipment provided by these kits are applicable to various emergencies involving severe bleeding. This highlights the broader importance of first aid training in public health.

Essential Steps in a Shark Bite Emergency

Experts recommend immediate action in a shark bite emergency to stop bleeding and seek help. Key steps include removing the injured person from the water, calling emergency services, applying firm pressure to the wound, and using a tourniquet if necessary.

Bohr explained, “In those critical minutes, calm, decisive action matters more than anything else. The goal is to control bleeding, call for help, and keep the person stable until paramedics take over.”

Beachgoers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the location of these kits and understand the essential first aid principles that underpin their use. Training in first aid turns bystanders into potential lifesavers.

This initiative follows an increase in awareness campaigns by Surf Life Saving NSW, aimed at educating the public on emergency response. The organisation believes that informed beachgoers can significantly impact survival rates during marine emergencies.

According to Bohr, “Knowing what to do, and acting quickly, can significantly increase the chances of survival.” He encourages coastal communities, surfers, and regular beach visitors to engage in first aid courses to enhance their response capabilities.

The rollout of these kits not only aims to improve safety at beaches but also seeks to inspire a culture of preparedness and confidence in handling emergencies.
