Event Brings Together Young Talent From Four States

Surfing legends Trent Munro and Jacko Baker will mentor young surfers during the Surf Reflections Junior Series at Hungry Head Beach on New South Wales’ Mid North Coast this weekend.

Eighty-two competitors, including eight sets of siblings, from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia will compete over three days in Under 14s and 16s categories for both boys and girls. This event is a key part of Surfing Australia’s National Series calendar, rated at 5500 points.

Exciting Opportunities for Young Surfers

The 2026 Surf Reflections Junior Series is a collaboration between Reflections Holidays and Surfest. It kicked off in February at Bonny Hills and will conclude with a final event in Tuncurry/Forster in November. This series provides an essential platform for young surfers to showcase their talent in familiar environments.

Surfest director Warren Smith noted the series’ exponential growth since its launch with a single event in 2024. “We’re set for a super fun weekend at Hungry Head, with chest-high waves and light winds expected,” Mr. Smith said. “Conditions like this present the perfect playing field for our athletes as they look to claim the coveted top prize.”

The Surf Reflections Junior Series not only nurtures young talent but also boosts local economies. Reflections data shows that the economic impact of the first event in 2024 was around $90,000, with projections of $270,000 in 2026 across all events.

Minister for Lands and Property, Sports and Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper emphasised the benefits of hosting the series at Crown land holiday parks. “Our Crown land holiday parks sit on some of the best surf breaks in the country,” he said, supporting sports participation and regional economies.

Trent Munro, involved with Scotts Head Boardriders and a lifeguard for Coffs Harbour, expressed his enthusiasm for mentoring the young surfers. “It’s fantastic to have this event locally for our kids to compete in and learn,” he said.

The event will feature heats starting on Friday, with finals on Sunday. Winners in each category will receive a $2500 accommodation voucher from Reflections. $4000 in cash prizes will be distributed over the competition.

The series, which opened with a single event in 2024, has expanded significantly. Warren Smith remarked, “Our partnership with Reflections and the support from local councils has ensured the growth of this Series.”

Former World Surf League pro surfer Trent Munro and Newcastle pro surfer Jacko Baker will also host a Q&A session on Saturday night to engage with young surfers, offering them insights into the professional world of surfing.

The Eats and Beats zone will provide entertainment and food options, allowing families and visitors to enjoy a vibrant atmosphere while supporting local businesses. This interactive area adds to the community-focused nature of the series, encouraging engagement and participation.

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
