Sweethearts HeartKids Campaign Returns This February

Sweethearts HeartKids runs during February awareness week

Every day in Australia, eight babies are born with childhood-onset heart disease. The condition often requires lifelong medical care. HeartKids is running its annual Sweethearts HeartKids campaign throughout February. The campaign aligns with Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, taking place from February 7th to 14th.

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day takes place on 14th February. Congenital heart disease remains the most common congenital condition in Australia. It affects families from birth and continues across a lifetime. Many families face ongoing treatment and repeated hospital visits.

Sweethearts HeartKids encourages Australians to donate $8. The figure reflects the eight babies diagnosed each day. Through this model, the campaign focuses on collective participation. Funds raised support more than 250,000 children, teenagers, and adults nationwide. Families and carers also receive assistance.

Funds raised help expand access to essential services. These services operate in hospitals, communities, and regional areas. Support includes family programs, education days, and teen camps. The HeartKids Helpline also receives funding. It offers guidance following diagnosis.

Sami Glastonbury, Heart Mum and HeartKids Chief Executive Officer, said, “As a mother of three, with two children living with heart conditions, I know how overwhelming a diagnosis can feel. HeartKids helps families feel seen and supported at a time when everything feels uncertain.”

She said, “Families often spend long periods in hospital or travelling for care. The practical and emotional support HeartKids provides is something you cannot put a price on.”

Glastonbury also said, “Giving $8 may seem like a small gesture, but when our generous community give together, the collective impact helps ensure families facing childhood-onset heart disease have support when it matters most.”

Campaign participation and national reach

Australians can support Sweethearts HeartKids in several ways. Individuals can donate directly throughout February. Fundraisers can host breakfasts, dinners, or social events. Volunteers can assist at campaign activations nationwide.

HeartKids volunteers will appear at shopping centres and public locations. These activations run between 9th and 14th February. Donations can be made on-site during these events.

Businesses are encouraged to participate across Australia. Participation can suit team size and location. Options include workplace fundraising and internal events. Offices and shopfronts may also display campaign support.

Childhood-onset heart disease describes lifelong heart conditions present from birth or childhood. Many cases require early surgery. Health outcomes can vary over time. Development, education, and employment may also be affected.

An estimated 250,000 Australians live with childhood-onset heart disease. Many more family members and carers are impacted. The condition creates significant healthcare demand. Economic and social effects extend beyond medical care.

HeartKids is the only Australian charity dedicated to childhood-onset heart disease. The organisation provides advocacy and support nationwide. For nearly 50 years, it has delivered services informed by lived experience. Its work aims to ensure families are supported at every stage.
