Enhancing Maritime Security with Airborne Technology
On May 7, 2026, UMag Solutions officially launched F1Mag4;, an advanced unmanned system for the rapid detection of naval mines and submarines. This system aims to enhance maritime security globally by providing a safer, more efficient method of detecting underwater threats.
Equipped with the F1Mag4; system, drones can scan vast areas of up to 6,000 hectares per hour. This airborne technology identifies underwater threats without risking personnel or deploying vessels. F1Mag4; detects moored and bottom mines, submarines, and uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) at depths reaching 500 meters. This capability is critical in regions where naval mines disrupt trade and pose security threats.
In the Strait of Hormuz, roughly 20% of global seaborne oil and a quarter of LNG trade transits through this chokepoint. Since early 2026, Iranian mine-laying activity has led to an active clearance campaign. Reports indicate even the mine-layers have lost track of what was deployed. NATO has increased patrols while proving the absence of a mine is now more challenging than finding one.
The Baltic Sea, with its shallow waters and heavy traffic, remains under the watchful eye of NATO’s Baltic Sentry mission. Since 2022, a string of cable, pipeline, and power-link incidents has made rapid, wide-area subsea screening essential.
Meanwhile, in the Black Sea, drifting mines from ongoing conflicts, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war, continue to threaten shipping. These mines have re-emerged as cost-effective and politically disruptive weapons. A single mine can spike insurance premiums and reroute global trade, highlighting the urgent need for solutions like F1Mag4;.
Arne D3;ssing Andreasen, CEO and Co-Founder of UMag Solutions, emphasised, “We designed F1Mag4; for the subsea threats that define modern warfare. The need to detect those threats at high speed, with accurate real-time data and without putting people or equipment in the water, or having marine vessels nearby, has never been greater.”
Key Features of F1Mag4;
Compatible with a range of drone platforms, F1Mag4; can be integrated into defence services worldwide. It provides real-time data transmission, ensuring immediate operational intelligence without delays. The system’s drone-agnostic design allows for use across various platforms, including UMS Skeldar and High-Eye, meeting the diverse needs of defence forces.
UMag Solutions will showcase F1Mag4; at the XPONENTIAL 2026 in Detroit and the NATO Naval Mine Warfare Conference 2026 in Ostend. These events provide opportunities for demonstrations and integration discussions with interested parties.
The launch of F1Mag4; comes at a time of increasing geopolitical tensions. Effective and wide-area screening is necessary to maintain maritime safety in strategic regions. Because F1Mag4; operates from the air, it is less dependent on weather, sea state, or vessel support, making it unaffected by sea ice, muddy waters, or boundary layers in the water column.
