New Capacity to Boost North American Supply
Vertex Energy, Inc. Has revealed a major project to expand its production capabilities. The company plans to increase Group III base oils output by 6,000 barrels per day at its Mobile, Alabama refinery, with operations beginning in 2029.
Utilising the existing hydrocracker and processing infrastructure, the initiative will enhance domestic supply for lubricant manufacturers. This strategic move will position Vertex as a leading Group III producer in North America.
Mark Smith, CEO of Vertex Energy, emphasised the significance of this project, noting, “This project reflects a major milestone in our continued focus on improved profitability and margin stabilization.” The investment is anticipated to improve Vertex’s ability to meet market demands for conventional Group III oils.
Details of the Expansion
The expansion involves producing 4 cSt, 6 cSt, and 8 cSt Group III oils using an existing hydrocracked vacuum gas oil stream. Preliminary design work is complete, and a high-pressure lubricants hydrotreating unit has been procured. Production is slated to start in 2029.
Group III base oils are crucial for high-performance automotive and industrial lubricants. They require strong performance characteristics and consistent product quality. This project will complement Vertex’s current operations, which include transportation fuels and re-refined Group III base oils production.
Operating an integrated used motor oil collection and processing network across the southern United States, Vertex secures a reliable feedstock supply for its base oil re-refining operations. Preliminary design work for the project has been completed, and a high-pressure lubricants hydrotreating unit has been secured. Vertex aims to continue producing transportation fuels and re-refined base oils alongside the new conventional Group III production.
