Dhilmar Enters Queensland Mining Sector

Yesterday, Anglo American revealed the sale of its Queensland steelmaking coal portfolio to UK mining company Dhilmar. This transaction occurred on 18th May 2026, with a strong focus on preserving jobs, conditions, and safety standards.

Included in the sale are the Grosvenor and Moranbah North underground coal mines. These mines have experienced operational difficulties since 2024. The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition for the workforce, concentrating on their conditions and entitlements.

Mitch Hughes, President of the MEU Queensland District, emphasised the enduring value of the Queensland metallurgical coal industry. He remarked, “We understand there is always uncertainty for workers during a transition of business. However, we will continue working closely with members throughout this process, ensuring workers’ conditions, entitlements and safety standards remain a priority.”

Ensuring Worker Safety and Standards

Introducing Dhilmar as a new major player in the Queensland mining sector presents an opportunity to elevate industry standards. The MEU, along with Industry Safety and Health Representatives, has been actively working with Anglo American and Resources Safety and Health Queensland to guarantee the safe reopening of the mines.

“QLD mining regions are highly dependent on the attitude and behaviour of the major mine operators in our industry,” Mr Hughes noted. He added that this change offers a chance to improve standards and contribute to local communities through fair employment practices.

Dhilmar’s entry into the Queensland mining sector marks a significant development. The company is anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping the future of coal mining in the region. Their operational approach could establish new benchmarks for industry practices.

Ongoing collaboration among stakeholders is vital to achieving these objectives. Dhilmar’s dedication to upholding high safety standards and fair employment practices will be essential in fostering community trust.

As Dhilmar prepares for operational control, safeguarding the workforce remains the primary concern. Ensuring that the mines are safely reopened is a top priority for all involved parties.
