Pressure Mounts on Australian Government
Legal experts, families of the detained, and Greens politicians are urging the Australian Government to break its silence over the illegal kidnapping of eleven Australian citizens by Israel in international waters on 19th May 2026.
The incident took place while the Australians were part of a flotilla heading towards Gaza, and they were approximately 100 nautical miles from its shores. Currently, nine boats are still continuing their journey towards Gaza.
Lawyers Greg Barns SC and Bernadette Zaydan, who support some of the Australians involved, said, “Israel has demonstrated a documented pattern of harm against civilian humanitarian workers.” They emphasised the need for urgent diplomatic and consular actions to ensure the safety of the participants.
According to the lawyers, the flotilla’s mission is lawful under International Humanitarian Law. “Australia is a party to all core international human rights treaties,” they added.
Political and Family Reactions
Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Greens Deputy Leader, criticised the Australian Government’s silence, accusing it of allowing Israel to act with impunity. “Israel attacked the humanitarian flotilla last month, and predictably they have just done it again,” she said.
Julie Webb-Pullman, mother of detainee Bianca Webb-Pullman, condemned the lack of action, highlighting the government’s failure to uphold international law and protect its citizens.
Senator David Shoebridge, Greens spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Justice, described the flotilla members as brave for their humanitarian efforts. He called on the Albanese government to stand up against Israel’s actions.
Ethan Floyd, a previous participant who was kidnapped and returned to Australia, urged the government to impose sanctions on Israel. “We need a stronger stance on human rights and international law,” he stated.
The legal team supporting the Australians insists that the government provide updates on the detainees’ whereabouts and whether they will be detained on the prison ship or taken against their will to Israel.
The situation remains tense as families and supporters await action from the Australian Government to safeguard the lives and rights of its citizens involved in the humanitarian mission.
