Diverse Generational Engagement in Workplace Support

Rehab Management has identified significant generational gaps in engagement with workplace wellbeing programmes across Australian workplaces. Insights released on 19th May 2026 reveal these challenges.

The findings emphasise the challenges employers face in addressing the diverse needs of a multi-generational workforce, spanning from Generation Z to employees in their 60s. According to Michelle Barratt, Head of Innovation and Psychological Services at Rehab Management, while investment in wellbeing programmes is increasing, engagement varies significantly across generations.

Generational Engagement Patterns in Workplace Support

Employees over 55 are generally the least likely to access workplace wellbeing services. They often prefer to manage issues privately, even during major life transitions such as retirement planning or health challenges.

Generation X employees juggle career demands with family responsibilities, seeking practical solutions and efficient use of time when engaging with support services. Michelle Barratt notes, “Gen X employees are often managing multiple responsibilities outside work.”

Millennials show a greater openness to early engagement with mental health resources. They value coaching and digital tools that integrate into their routines. This generation is more comfortable seeking help before challenges escalate.

Generation Z expects authentic and meaningful workplace support. They are quick to disengage from services perceived as insincere. Barratt states, “If wellbeing initiatives appear as a ‘tick-and-flick’ exercise, they will quickly disengage.”

According to Safe Work Australia, psychological injury claims account for about nine per cent of workers’ compensation claims. These claims involve the longest recovery times and highest costs.

Rehab Management insights reveal that different generations have unique approaches to seeking support, influenced by life stages and attitudes towards help. Barratt emphasises the importance of tailoring wellbeing initiatives to reflect these varying life stages and expectations. She suggests practical steps such as offering multiple access points and promoting early intervention.

Organisations increasingly seek integrated psychological and workplace support services, like those provided by Senda Psychology, part of the Rehab Management group. As Australian workplaces become more age-diverse, tailoring approaches to employee wellbeing becomes crucial.
