Sydney’s $2.3 Billion Infrastructure Investment Plan

Major Developments and Key Budget Allocations

The City of Sydney has unveiled a monumental $2.3 billion investment plan aimed at improving infrastructure and services over the next decade. More than $1 billion will be allocated in the coming year, according to the council’s statement on May 19th.

The 2026/27 budget includes $671 million dedicated to operational expenses which will support local businesses and ensure the upkeep of essential community services such as roads, parks, and waste management. $265 million will be earmarked for capital works, addressing the city’s expanding population.

Key projects planned for the next five years include a $150 million public square at Town Hall, the $78 million Mandible Street sports precinct, and a $21.8 million upgrade of Sydney Square. The city will also invest $18 million in pedestrianising George Street and $18.9 million for a total renovation of Belmore Park.

The budget allocates $46.8 million for the renewal of Wentworth Park, set to commence after its transfer from the State Government. $15 million will be used for upgrades to both Victoria Park Pool and Cook and Philip Park Pool, while Alexandria Park will see a $15 million enhancement.

Budget Breakdown and Community Impact

Lord Mayor Clover Moore emphasised the city’s commitment to maintaining its stature as a global leader. She said, “With careful planning and prudent investment, we’ve built a strong financial position for our city. Now we want to invest those funds to strengthen Sydney’s international reputation as a leading global city.”

The budget also designates $90 million for resource recovery and public cleansing services, while $54 million will support parks, greening, and leisure services. Notably, $7 million will continue the creation of the George Street pedestrian boulevard between Hunter and Essex streets.

Cycleway infrastructure will benefit from $3.5 million to construct a new path along Ultimo Road, Darling Drive, and Campbell Street, and $3.4 million will complete the Primrose Avenue Quietway. a new bike network between Surry Hills and Central Station will have $2.6 million allocated.
