National Recognition for Emerging Architects
The winners of the 2026 Emerging Architect Prize have been unveiled. This prize celebrates outstanding contributions to architectural practice, education, and community involvement across Australia. Sponsored by BlueScope, it showcases the talents of emerging architects from each state and territory.
This year’s winners will proceed to national judging, with the National Emerging Architect Prize winner announced later this year. Tynan Freeman from Stewart Architecture represents the Australian Capital Territory. His projects, such as MICA and Kashmir Apartments, reimagine urban density and enhance liveability.
Recognizing Emerging Talent
Hayden Federico of The Buchan Group is the International Chapter winner. In New South Wales, Simon Rochowski from studioplusthree was recognised for his innovative designs. Dominika Richards of Deicke Richards Architects earned the award in Queensland.
Jasmine Placentino from Parabolica received the prize in South Australia for her civic-minded architectural approach. Madeline Sewall of Up to Something in Victoria was noted for her leadership in sustainability and public advocacy.
Guy Edwards of BE-Architects was awarded in Tasmania for his commitment to socially responsible design. In Western Australia, Mike Sneyd from EKD Architects was praised for his culturally respectful and environmentally sustainable projects in Broome. No award was given in the Northern Territory due to insufficient nominations.
Tynan Freeman remarked, “It’s an honour to be awarded alongside peers I know and respect, and for contributions across study, practice, and advocacy that have shaped my approach, particularly to housing.”
Freeman actively contributes to industry advocacy. As a Chapter Councillor and Chair of the Housing Quality and Choice Taskforce, he advances housing as a key architectural and civic concern in Australia.
His design excellence includes competition work, having been shortlisted for the Light Rail Station Ideas Competition, NEAT Housing, and the Tapestry Design Prize. Freeman also participates in awards juries and contributes to architectural education at the University of Canberra.
The Emerging Architect Prize continues to spotlight new voices in architecture, supporting efforts to advance the profession and contribute to the public arena. The national winner will be announced later this year.
