Exploring Solutions for Social Cohesion and More
An Adelaide seminar titled ‘The Answer Is Human Rights’ will explore how human rights can help resolve various social challenges facing Australia. The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, 25th June, at the U City Function Centre, Adelaide, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
The Australian Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Equal Opportunity South Australia, presents this event as part of their 40 Years programme. This initiative marks four decades of the Commission’s role as Australia’s national human rights institution. Discussions at the seminar will address pressing issues such as social cohesion, housing affordability, and the impacts of digital technology.
Prominent human rights advocates will form the panel, including AHRC Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald AM, AHRC Chief Executive Leanne Smith, JusticeNet SA CEO Rebecca Plummer, and Adelaide University Associate Professor Dr. Sarah Moulds. These experts will share insights on enhancing human rights protections to create safer and fairer communities.
Key Issues and Proposals
Topics will include revitalising national commitment to human rights and solutions tailored for South Australian residents. Attendees will engage with proposals addressing economic inequality and climate change impacts. The seminar will emphasise the right to peaceful protest and the importance of a strong national commitment to human rights.
Commission President Hugh de Kretser remarked, “For most of us, most of the time, Australia is a great place to live. But despite our nation’s wealth, many people are struggling. It’s in everyone’s interest to protect human rights. Stronger protections promote equality, safety, dignity, and prosperity for all people in Australia.”
Acting South Australian Equal Opportunity Commissioner Kara Wiseman highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “Now more than ever, we need to strengthen both Australia’s and South Australia’s commitment to and accountability for protecting human rights and preventing discrimination.”
