Six-Year Study Highlights Resource Efficiency

April 15th marked the release of an important report by the Additive Manufacturer Green Trade Association (AMGTA) focusing on additive manufacturing’s role in resource-efficient systems. The document, titled ‘Additive Manufacturing in Resource-Efficient Manufacturing Systems’, was presented at the AMGTA 2026 Annual Member Summit in Boston.

Exploring evaluations across part, system, and enterprise levels, the report emphasises additive manufacturing‘s benefits in supply chain resilience and capital allocation optimization. Traditional cost comparisons often misrepresent these advantages by ignoring indirect costs like tooling capital and inventory carrying costs, leading to obsolescence write-offs.

Over six years of observation, AMGTA examined both technology developers and manufacturing users to create findings applicable for investor presentations, policy discussions, and procurement conversations.

Independent Perspective on Additive Manufacturing

AMGTA offers an independent perspective, balancing inputs from both sides without commercial interests. this unique position allows AMGTA to address issues neither side could resolve alone.

Sherri Monroe, Executive Director of AMGTA, stated, “The technology is proven. But the current adoption curve doesn’t reflect it, and one major reason is that the industry has been evaluating AM against a standard that was never designed to capture what AM actually changes.”

Brian Neff, Chair of the AMGTA Board of Directors, added, “This report is that voice. It makes the argument we’ve been building toward, complete, rigorous, and designed to hold up under scrutiny from finance, procurement, and policy.”

Identifying a framing and measurement problem rather than a technological one, the report provides an evaluative structure for organisations. This structure enables complete comparisons across all three levels at which additive manufacturing creates value.

AMGTA, as the only global independent organisation focused on additive manufacturing and resource-efficient systems, holds a unique position. The report could not have been produced by a technology provider without appearing as advocacy.

The report is accessible at www.AMGTA.org, along with the companion document ‘Strategy 2030: What We Do and Why Membership Matters’, available to AMGTA members.
