FRACGP-RG award holders can now apply through Ahpra

Doctors with existing FRACGP-RG awards can now apply for specialist registration in Rural Generalist Medicine through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, or Ahpra.

The application process opened after the Medical Board of Australia formally recognised Rural Generalist Medicine as a new field of specialty practice within general practice.

The Royal Australian College of GPs welcomed the change on 2 September 2026 and described it as an important step for healthcare outside major cities.

RACGP Rural Chair Associate Professor Michael Clements said the new category acknowledges the advanced skills and broad scope of practice that Rural Generalists bring to communities across Australia.

In many rural, regional and remote areas, those doctors provide a broad range of care close to home that patients might otherwise need to travel to access.

Clements said opening the registration pathway also recognises the training, expertise and contribution of Rural Generalists within Australia’s health system.

He said the move should help build the rural medical workforce, strengthen Rural Generalist medicine as a career path, and improve access to care for people living outside the major cities.

Title protection starts in March 2027

From 29 March 2027, Specialist Rural Generalist will become a protected title under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.

After that date, only practitioners with specialist registration in Rural Generalist Medicine will be allowed to use the title Rural Generalist.

Before applying, the RACGP urged doctors to check the eligibility requirements and read Ahpra’s guidance material.

Specialist registration will not be granted automatically. The Medical Board of Australia assesses eligibility, while Ahpra runs the administrative process.

Clements urged any doctor who may qualify to review the published requirements and start the process early.

The RACGP is the national college for general practitioners and has supported education standards and practice for more than 60 years.
