Australian Programme Empowers Women in Jamalpur

Women in Jamalpur, Bangladesh, are leading climate adaptation efforts, marking a significant shift in household leadership. Bangladesh is ranked 11th globally for climate disaster risk, facing challenges that these women are addressing. The Australian-funded initiative has impacted 55,795 individuals across 318 villages, specifically empowering women with skills in composting and crop management. This programme has enabled 90% of participating women entrepreneurs to meet their financial objectives.

In the Jamalpur district, farmers are adopting climate-smart practices like water-saving irrigation techniques to combat increasing floods and droughts. Since the program’s inception, 12,518 producer group members have marketed 36,039 metric tonnes of produce collectively. 84% report better prices from collective selling.

According to Grant Bayldon, CEO of World Vision Australia, “In communities most vulnerable to climate shocks, the strongest adaptation is seen in women with agricultural expertise and newfound decision-making power at home.”
