Revitalisation Plans for Haymarket Precinct
Belmore Park in Sydney will undergo a major upgrade after receiving approval from the City of Sydney Council. The project, set to begin in 2028, aims to transform the park into a more inviting green space with enhanced features.
Plans include improved lighting, expanded lawn areas, additional seating, new garden beds, and simplified pathways. A new paved area with amphitheatre seating will be created to host events like music and dance performances, community gatherings, and markets.
According to Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO, improvements are part of the wider revitalisation of the Haymarket precinct. “Upgrading Belmore Park was identified as an integral part of our broader revitalisation of the Haymarket precinct, following extensive consultation with the community about the area’s future,” she said.
The historic Chinatown gates will be restored, and Dixon Street will see upgrades to paving, lighting, and shopfronts. These enhancements aim to elevate the overall environment of the Haymarket area.
Historical and Community Significance
Belmore Park has a rich history, having been designated for public recreation in 1868. It withstood significant changes like the development of Central Station and associated transport networks in the early 20th century. The upcoming redesign seeks to honour this heritage while improving its usability.
The dilapidated bandstand will be removed, its memory preserved in a new play space designed to be a central feature of the park. Improved pathways will ensure smoother travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
As a significant part of the local community’s heritage, Belmore Park’s upgrade is expected to create a more welcoming space for all visitors. Construction is anticipated to start in 2028, after further refinement of the plans.
