Partnership with NT Government to Assist Communities
Charles Darwin University (CDU) students have commenced placements with the Northern Territory Government to aid communities affected by recent flooding and cyclones, as part of a new partnership. This CDU disaster relief initiative was announced on 15th April, highlighting the critical role students will play in supporting these communities.
More than ten students from CDU’s Bachelor of Humanitarian Aid and Development, Bachelor of Social Work, and Master of Social Work programmes are involved. They have begun their placements within the Department of Children and Families’ Welfare Functional Group and at Batchelor evacuation centres. The University expects more students to join in the coming weeks, significantly enhancing the support network.
CDU Pro Vice-Chancellor Faculty of Health, Professor Dominic Upton, emphasised the partnership’s importance, stating, “At CDU, we believe that the best learning happens when it creates real impact.” He pointed out that these placements allow students to test their skills in a real-world crisis context.
University and Government Collaboration
Professor Fiona Coulson, CDU Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, expressed her pride in the university’s active role within the community. Seventeen staff members have volunteered to assist with the relief efforts, contributing to administrative tasks, planning, logistics, and on-the-ground coordination.
Department of Children and Families Chief Executive Officer Brent Warren remarked, “Having CDU students on the ground strengthens our response while giving them invaluable, real-world experience supporting Territory families.” He highlighted that this collaboration not only addresses current needs but also builds a strong local workforce for the future.
As the flood recovery continues, more students are expected to join, expanding support for affected areas. This partnership is a testament to CDU’s commitment to the Northern Territory, bringing their educational mission beyond the classroom to meet the urgent needs of the community.
In addition to student placements, CDU staff from various departments have actively participated in emergency response efforts. Their contributions range from planning and logistics to administrative support, showcasing the university’s comprehensive involvement in disaster relief.
The involvement of CDU students and staff in these efforts reflects the university’s dedication to practical learning and community service. This initiative ensures that students not only acquire academic knowledge but also gain practical experience in disaster management.
CDU’s partnership with the NT Government Department of Children and Families is part of a broader strategy to enhance local resilience against natural disasters. By integrating academic programmes with real-world applications, CDU prepares students to address the unique challenges faced by the Northern Territory.
