Thousands to Participate on 22nd May
On 22nd May, Coastrek will celebrate its 50th event in the Mornington Peninsula. Over 3,000 participants will trek along scenic coastal routes. The event, founded by Di Westaway, focuses on enhancing women’s physical and mental health. Since 2009, Coastrek has raised over $58 million for charity.
The Mornington Peninsula event offers 20km, 30km, or 50km routes, starting at Cape Schanck and ending at Point Nepean. This year’s goal is to raise $1.6 million for Beyond Blue.
Key Milestones and Impact
Coastrek events have attracted 96,000 trekkers and covered over 3 million kilometers, equivalent to circling the globe 40 times. The movement is supported by 850,000 donors and nearly 2,900 volunteers nationwide.
The inaugural Coastrek in 2009 featured 40 women trekking from La Perouse to Palm Beach, covering 126km over 32 hours. Today, it inspires thousands across Australia.
According to a participant survey, 10-15% travel interstate for the events, and 66% extend their stay beyond the trek, benefiting local tourism. Approximately 25% of participants stay for three nights or more, turning their trek into a weekend getaway.
Di Westaway, who received a Medal of the Order of Australia for her contributions to women’s sport and charitable initiatives, reflected, “Coastrek is about more than hiking. It’s about helping women reconnect with themselves, nature, friendship, and health.”
Coastrek’s impact extends to regional economies. The Mornington Peninsula event is set to continue this tradition, offering participants a chance to explore breathtaking landscapes while supporting a vital cause.
