Impact of Fuel Crisis on Legal Services
Community Legal Centres Australia urgently requests a funding boost of $11.9 million from the Federal Government. This request is crucial to mitigate the ongoing fuel crisis’s impact on their services and ensure continued access to frontline support for vulnerable individuals nationwide.
This week, over 40 community legal centres gathered for an emergency national meeting to address the crisis’s effect on clients’ ability to access safety and justice. Rising fuel costs are increasingly hindering their outreach capabilities, affecting those in rural and remote areas the most.
In rural regions, 75% of the work done by community legal centres supports victims of family and domestic violence. Many clients in these areas lack reliable access to transport, internet, or mobile phones, making outreach travel essential for in-person assistance.
Before the fuel crisis, resource constraints already forced centres to turn away over 1,000 people daily, including 400 victim-survivors. The organisation’s 2026-27 pre-budget submission outlines eight targeted measures totaling $226 million annually to address these shortfalls.
Rising Fuel Costs and Outreach Challenges
Tim Leach, CEO of Community Legal Centres Australia, stated, “Community legal centres serve as a lifeline to safety for people in crisis. In remote areas, accessing vital frontline support often requires community lawyers and social workers to drive long distances.”
Leach further noted, “Skyrocketing fuel costs and fuel shortages threaten to sever this lifeline. Centres are forced to make difficult decisions about how often and how far they can drive to reach those needing help to stay safe and well.”
The economic hardships are worsening legal issues. Community centres report spikes in family violence, acute financial stress, and other related legal problems. This trend is expected to increase over the coming months. They stress the importance of a stable support network during uncertain times.
