Australia Faces Construction Skills Shortage

Quick Entry with One-Day Training

Australia’s construction sector is facing a significant skills shortage. Entry-level positions are accessible through a one-day White Card course, according to industry experts.

The White Card certification is the minimum requirement for working on construction sites and opens doors to various entry-level roles. These include general labourers, site assistants, traffic controllers, and construction cleaners, with hourly rates ranging from AUD 30 to 40.

Samuel Bohr, Director of National White Card Courses, stated, “While many construction roles require trade qualifications and experience, entry-level opportunities are more accessible than most people realise. Entering the industry can be as simple as completing a one-day White Card course,” he said.

Wide Range of Opportunities

Bohr emphasised that a White Card acts as both a safety requirement and a gateway to various entry-level roles, requiring no prior experience. This certification allows individuals to secure casual or ongoing work soon after completion, often through labour hire firms.

“A White Card doesn’t lock you into one pathway. It gets you onto site,” Bohr added. “From there, people can explore different roles, gain experience, and decide whether they want to pursue a trade or continue working in general construction.”

Australia’s construction industry remains one of the country’s largest employers, with ongoing workforce shortages creating opportunities for new entrants. Major infrastructure projects and housing developments are underway across the nation, increasing demand for entry-level workers.

Bohr noted that low barriers to entry and strong earning potential make construction an attractive option for school leavers, career changers, and those returning to work. “There aren’t many industries where you can complete a one-day course and step into a job that pays well and offers long-term career pathways,” he remarked.

According to industry data, there are thousands of roles that need to be filled. For individuals who are work-ready and have their White Card, there are genuine opportunities to start earning almost immediately.

The construction sector’s low entry barriers allow people to swiftly enter the workforce. This is particularly appealing in high-growth regions where demand for infrastructure is increasing rapidly. With major projects and civil works underway, entry-level roles are crucial to meet the sector’s needs.
