Committee to Address Economic and Social Outcomes

Public hearings in Sydney and Dubbo will be conducted by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Primary Industries. These are scheduled for 18th and 19th May 2026, focusing on critical minerals projects across Australia.

Examining social licence and economic development outcomes is the goal of this inquiry. Mining companies, local governments, academics, and unions will share their perspectives on potential impacts.

“Effective engagement, economic participation, and socially and economically sustainable development are key factors shaping social licence and economic development outcomes for critical minerals projects,” stated Meryl Swanson, Committee Chair.

Public Hearings Scheduled

Cliftons, Level 13, 60 Margaret Street, Sydney, will host the hearing on 18th May from 9.00 am to 3.20 pm. The following day, the Dubbo hearing is set at the Jacaranda Room, Dubbo RSL, from 9.00 am to 11.30 am.

In these sessions, representatives of local government in western New South Wales will discuss regional challenges and opportunities. A key proponent of critical minerals development will also offer insights.

Achieving socially acceptable and economically beneficial outcomes in critical minerals projects is a main focus. These projects are essential for the sustainability of mining regions and the national economy.

Following the hearings, the committee will compile its findings to guide future policy and development. Ensuring that project benefits reach local communities and the broader Australian economy is a priority.

A live broadcast of the hearings will be available on the APH website. The inquiry’s official website provides more information, including submission guidelines.

Terms of reference for the inquiry and submission details are accessible online. Stakeholders have a platform to contribute to discussions on critical minerals.

On Monday, 18th May 2026, the committee will hear from a diverse range of stakeholders, including mining and mineral processing companies. The programme for the public hearing is available on the inquiry website.
