Public Hearing to Address Challenges and Opportunities

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Primary Industries will hold a public hearing in Canberra on Friday, 29 May 2026. This hearing will explore the impact of critical minerals projects on regional development across Australia.

Key Stakeholders and Submissions

The Committee will hear from representatives of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Australian Aluminium Council, and Regional Development Australia Goldfields Esperance. Each group will present their insights into the challenges and opportunities within the sector.

According to the MCA, mining has been a cornerstone for regional Australia’s development. Their submission emphasises that “long-life mining is the stable foundation that makes every other development pathway possible.”

Committee Chair Meryl Swanson stated, “The evidence received by the inquiry to date has highlighted both the opportunities and challenges faced by regional communities hosting critical minerals projects.” She emphasised the importance of collaboration among governments, industries, and communities to maximise the benefits of critical minerals. “Getting critical minerals right will benefit the nation for decades to come,” she added.

The hearing is scheduled from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm AEST at Committee Room 2R2 in Parliament House, Canberra. It will be available for live broadcast on the APH website.

Critical minerals projects are crucial for regional development. They support workforce pathways, local procurement, and infrastructure planning. These projects are essential for the diversification of remote communities.

The inquiry will address both opportunities and challenges faced by regional communities that host critical minerals projects. This initiative aims to ensure these communities can diversify and thrive.

For more information, including the full terms of reference and details on making a submission, interested parties can visit the inquiry website. This initiative seeks to maximise the economic benefits for regional areas.

The Minerals Council of Australia notes that mining supports structured local procurement and coordinated infrastructure planning. These developments are instrumental for long-term regional growth.
