Scholarships Aim to Bridge Skills Gap

The Social Cyber and Tech Academy has announced new scholarships for veterans to address Australia’s skills shortage in cyber security and AI policy. This initiative, revealed on 23rd April 2026, coincides with ANZAC Day, emphasizing the ongoing contribution of Australian Defence Force veterans.

Veterans will benefit from advanced workshops, which include highly interactive policy sprints. They will engage in short, intensive online sessions, each lasting 3.5 hours over two sessions. The workshops cover various topics, such as the Crisis in Tech Policy and Diplomacy, Cyber Organisation Stress Points, and Economics and Strategic Decision-Making for Cyber and AI. they explore Cyber & Tech Policy in China and Policy Design and Regulatory Systems for Cyber and AI.

Lisa Materano, Director of the Academy, remarked, “ANZAC Day is a time to recognise service, sacrifice, and ongoing contribution. Many former ADF members bring exceptional leadership, operational experience, and a deep understanding of national security challenges.”

Veterans Transition Support

Australia faces a critical demand for cyber and technology policy expertise. The scholarship programme assists veterans in transitioning into civilian roles. Soldier On, a veterans’ support agency, will promote these opportunities to veterans and their families, ensuring broader awareness and participation.

Professor Glenn Withers AO, a co-founder of the Academy, stated, “Our programmes are designed to translate military capabilities into the civilian cyber and technology policy landscape, extending pathways into meaningful and impactful second careers.” He emphasised that veterans are already adept at complex problem-solving and risk management in high-stakes environments.

Scholarships will be available from July to December for up to 15 veterans per cohort. The workshops aim to equip participants with strategic insights necessary for senior advisory and leadership positions. Additional scholarships are also available for First Nations communities and individuals from developing countries.

Eligibility and application details are accessible on the Academy’s website. This initiative aligns with the Academy’s mission to enhance professional education access and support workforce development in critical areas necessary for Australia’s future security.

Blended Learning International, an Australian Registered Training Organisation, collaborates with the Academy to deliver these workshops. Both Lisa Materano and Glenn Withers serve on the Board of this organisation, ensuring a strong governance framework for the educational offerings.
