Queensland MP's Move Sparks Call for Change
Lyle Shelton, the Family First National Director, has called for the Liberal National Party (LNP) to lift its gag order on abortion discussions. This comes after Queensland MP Robbie Katter pushed for a parliamentary debate on abortion pill regulations.
Transparency and accountability are crucial in discussions involving unborn children’s lives and women’s health and safety. Premier David Crisafulli’s restrictions on this debate have drawn criticism.
"Whether or not Robbie Katter's disallowance motion succeeds is not the point. The point is that elected representatives should be free to debate matters of life and death in the Parliament," Shelton stated.
Concerns Over Abortion Pill MS-2 Step
Family First has expressed concerns about the abortion pill MS-2 Step. Research shows that one in ten women experience harm from its use. Shelton highlights the lack of public discussion surrounding its increased usage and the associated risks.
Last year, a major US study documented cases of severe haemorrhaging, infections, and emergency hospitalisations following chemical abortions. Reports also indicate psychological trauma among women who complete the abortion process at home without support.
The decision by the Queensland Government to allow nurse practitioners and midwives to administer abortion drugs marks a significant policy change. Shelton argues that this change requires parliamentary scrutiny.
He remarked, "If the government is confident these changes are in the public interest, it should have no fear of open debate." Shelton urges all Queensland Parliament members to support open debate on abortion-related issues.
Family First commends Robbie Katter for advocating democratic accountability. They call on Queensland Parliament members to restore free and open debate on abortion matters.
According to Shelton, "No issue is more important than the protection of human life and the wellbeing of mothers who too often are coerced into aborting their babies by men or family members."
