Students Encouraged to Be Water Heroes

Greater Western Water has announced the opening of its National Water Week poster competition for 2026. This initiative invites students from Melbourne and the surrounding regions to showcase their creativity and commitment to water conservation.

The competition is open to children and students from early learning centres, kindergartens, primary schools, and Year 7-8 secondary students. They are asked to explore the theme 'Water Heroes: Make Every Drop Count' through creative posters.

Participants are encouraged to use a variety of creative materials, including traditional art supplies and digital technology. These tools will help them illustrate innovative ideas on water conservation and highlight the importance of making every drop count.

According to Greater Western Water's General Manager Strategy and Partnerships, Kessia Thomson, "National Water Week is a great opportunity to inspire the next generation to think about how their everyday actions can make a real difference."

Thomson emphasised the importance of the initiative, noting that statewide water storages are down by 17% compared to last year. She stated, "It has become increasingly important that communities understand how we can all do our part to protect our water resources."

The competition offers a platform for young people to learn about water conservation and engage in solutions. Thomson added, "This competition is a wonderful way to include our younger people to learn how to be a part of the solution."

Competition Details and Submission

Submissions for the competition close at 5pm on 11th September. Participants have the chance to win a range of prizes and gain entry into the state-wide National Water Week poster competition. Winners will be announced during National Water Week, which runs from 19th to 25th October.

The event is proudly supported by the Australian Water Association and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s School Water Efficiency Program. These organisations contribute to raising awareness about conserving water.

Greater Western Water operates across 3,700 square kilometers, stretching from Melbourne’s central business district to Little River in the south, Myrniong in the west, and Lancefield in the north. For more information on entry guidelines and competition details, visit gww.com.au/nww.
