Market Dynamics and Vendor Performance

India's smartphone shipments decreased by 5% year-on-year to 30.9 million units in the first quarter of 2026, according to Omdia research. The decline is attributed to seasonally weak demand and cautious inventory strategies amid pricing pressures.

Vivo retained its leadership in the Indian market, shipping 6.3 million units to capture a 20% market share in Q1 2026. Samsung secured the second position with 5.1 million shipments and a 16% market share, benefiting from late-quarter product launches.

OPPO, excluding its sub-brands realme and OnePlus, emerged as the fastest-growing vendor among the top five, increasing its shipments to 4.7 million units, which accounts for a 15% market share. This growth was fuelled by strong sales of the A6x, K14, and Reno 15 series.

Vendor Strategies and Market Challenges

Xiaomi and Apple rounded out the top five vendors, with shipments of 3.8 million and 2.9 million units, respectively. Apple's appearance marks its first entry into the top five for a Q1 period in India.

Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Omdia, explained how vendors are responding to cost pressures. "In 1Q26, vendors took different approaches to pricing as cost pressures intensified," said Chaurasia. "These shifts reflected diverging priorities across pricing, margins, launch cycles and channel inventory, exposing clear strategic differences."

The report highlights that price increases have been especially significant in the ₹10,000–₹20,000 segment, eroding affordability. macroeconomic factors such as the depreciation of the rupee and rising inflation have further impacted consumer purchasing power.

Looking ahead, the Indian smartphone market faces challenges with shipments expected to decline by double digits in 2026. Vendors are likely to focus on balancing margin recovery with demand sensitivity as consumers increasingly lean towards repairs and second-hand devices.

Despite challenges, some vendors like Motorola, iQOO, and Google have shown resilience. Meanwhile, vivo's success is supported by strong sell-out visibility and traction from the V70 series. Samsung's late-quarter boost was driven by flagship Galaxy S26 and refreshed mid-range A-series, alongside strong volumes from entry-level A07 and A17 models.

OPPO's robust momentum across the A6x, K14, and Reno 15 series has been pivotal in its growth, with the Reno 15 series benefiting from a broader SKU mix across mid-to-premium segments.
