Young Surfers Excel at Hungry Head Beach

Alanni Morris, Max Goold, and Hugo Spierings achieved back-to-back victories at the Surf Reflections Junior Series. This event took place on the New South Wales Mid North Coast over the weekend.

Held at Hungry Head Beach, the event featured former World Surf League pro surfer Trent Munro and Newcastle pro surfer Jacko Baker. They provided mentorship to 82 young competitors from NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia.

The Surf Reflections Junior Series is a significant event, with a 5500 rating on Surfing Australia’s National Series calendar. It is hosted by Reflections Holidays and Surfest, emphasizing the importance of nurturing new surfing talent.

In the Under 14s category, Morris and Goold displayed remarkable performances, securing wins once again. Hugo Spierings excelled in the Under 16 boys division, while Pearl Eaton from Lilli Pilli secured the Under 16 girls title.

Competition Highlights and Winners

Alanni Morris was thrilled with her achievement, saying, “It was a little bit hard getting a wave at times, but you just had to get on the right one.”

The winners in various categories were Alanni Morris, Ella Campbell, and Coco Woolley in the U14s girls category. In the U14s boys, Max Goold, Bede Cant, and Mack Ringis emerged victorious. Pearl Eaton, Ella Campbell, and Lily Sein led the U16s girls, while Hugo Spierings, Jonny Tooth, and Zeke Woolam dominated the U16s boys.

Surfest director Warren Smith praised the ideal conditions, stating, “The Urunga community has welcomed us with open arms and we’re excited to build on the success we’ve had here on the North Coast in future years.”

Each winner received a $2500 accommodation voucher from Reflections Holidays. This prize supports their surfing journey while promoting tourism in the region.

The 2026 Surf Reflections Junior Series kicked off in February at Bonny Hills, where Morris and Goold also claimed victories in their categories. The series will continue with the next event scheduled for November 13th to 15th at Nine Mile Beach, Tuncurry.

Trent Munro and Jacko Baker’s involvement as mentors provided invaluable experience and guidance to the young surfers, enhancing the event’s impact on their development.

The series not only fosters young talent but also brings together communities and surfing enthusiasts, showcasing the vibrant surfing culture in Australia. The competition spans various locations, offering young surfers the chance to compete at their home breaks while gaining exposure to different surfing conditions.

The event concluded with the announcement of the next series installment, ensuring ongoing opportunities for young surfers to improve and compete. The Surf Reflections Junior Series continues to be a pivotal platform for emerging surfers, providing both competitive experience and community engagement.
