X-Range C15 to Transform BEV Platforms

Horse Powertrain has introduced the X-Range C15 Direct Drive hybrid powertrain at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, aiming to enhance battery electric vehicle (BEV) platforms. This innovative system integrates a full hybrid powertrain into a single compact unit, including a 4-cylinder engine, transmission, power electronics, and an electric motor. It mounts to the rear subframe, allowing a double isolated installation for optimal noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance.

The X-Range C15 is part of Horse Powertrain’s X-Range family, which includes the HORSE F15 and HORSE C15 systems. This new powertrain offers automakers the flexibility to transform existing BEV platforms into hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) without significant redesign. It supports both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations, providing outputs of 70kW and 120kW respectively. These configurations cater to various vehicle segments, from B- and C-segment vehicles to larger D-segment vehicles and light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Innovative Motor Configuration

The X-Range C15 Direct Drive features a unique P1 + P3 motor configuration. The P1 motor, integrated at the engine’s crankshaft, primarily acts as a generator, producing 70kW for the naturally aspirated variant and 110kW for the turbocharged variant. The P3 motor, positioned at the transmission’s output shaft, delivers electric traction. This setup enhances system efficiency in parallel mode by directly connecting the engine to the wheels, surpassing the performance of pure serial mode hybrids.

Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain, stated, “The X-Range family of powertrains reflects today’s market realities, allowing automakers to quickly pivot from BEVs to hybrids and range extenders, all using a single platform.” This flexibility is crucial for manufacturers adapting to evolving market demands.

The integration of exhaust and after-treatment systems at the rear maximises space for batteries and passenger compartments, maintaining vehicle ergonomics and efficiency. Horse Powertrain, headquartered in London, operates globally, serving clients such as Renault Group and Volvo Cars. The company continues to lead in developing innovative powertrain solutions that meet stringent emissions standards while providing enhanced driving experiences.

By enabling automakers to use a single shared platform for their BEV, HEV, PHEV, and REEV lineups, the X-Range C15 Direct Drive offers significant cost savings and production efficiencies. This modular approach aligns with the industry’s shift towards more sustainable and versatile vehicle architectures. The X-Range C15 Direct Drive is designed to replace the rear electric drive unit of an existing BEV platform, making it suitable for various automaker requirements, including fully powering the rear wheels or supporting an all-wheel drive setup.
