Viking Age Exhibition and Activities

The Australian National Maritime Museum invites you to a thrilling winter holiday programme centred on the Viking Age. Visitors can enjoy this experience starting with a Free Open Day on 5th July, which also marks the beginning of NAIDOC Week.

The museum’s latest exhibition, ‘Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard,’ will be a focal point, offering a glimpse into ancient history. Visitors will be able to participate in creative workshops, museum tours, and child-friendly activity trails.

NAIDOC Week kicks off with a Free Open Day, featuring cultural activities, performances, and workshops that celebrate the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the theme is ’50 Years of Deadly.’

Hands-On Workshops and Activities

One of the programme’s highlights includes jewellery-making workshops with Kristy Dickinson, the designer and founder of Haus of Dizzy. Participants will craft unique pieces using materials from Haus of Dizzy’s collection.

Kids on Deck is a dynamic maker space where children can learn to write in runes, craft embossed jewellery, and build model longships. They can also uncover treasures at an archaeological dig site.

Budding archaeologists will have the opportunity to experiment with material transformation using a plastic recycling machine. This hands-on experience is designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.

Families can explore the Bricktropolis: Viking Village, where they will construct Lego® models and engage in the challenge of creating their own Viking world.

Technology enthusiasts can participate in the Underwater Drone Challenge, testing their skills as they navigate drones beneath the harbour’s surface.

The Museum Treasure Trail offers an educational journey through maritime history. Meanwhile, Deep Sea Screenings provide interactive experiences for children of all ages, ensuring both entertainment and learning.

The museum will be open daily from 10am to 4:30pm, with activities scheduled throughout the school holidays. While some events require bookings, others do not, and prices vary based on membership status and activity type.

Don’t miss this opportunity to dive into history and culture at the Australian National Maritime Museum this winter holiday.
