Hair Donation Event to Support Cancer Research
Mercedes College is set to participate in the Ponytail Project for the sixth consecutive year on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. During this event, 44 students and two staff members will donate their hair to raise funds for Cancer Council WA. The public event will be hosted at the College’s Sports Centre from 12:45 pm.n
Since joining the Ponytail Project, hundreds of students from Mercedes College have collectively raised more than $150,000. This significant amount has been dedicated to supporting cancer research. Fundraising efforts have included activities like bake sales and other community initiatives.n
This year, many participants plan to donate significantly more than the required 20 centimeters of hair, with several cutting over 30 centimeters. Representatives from Cancer Council WA will be present to show their support and acknowledge the students’ contributions.n
Principal Dr. Lucie McCrory praised the students’ courage, empathy, and unity. She said, “Each year, the Ponytail Project reminds us what young people can achieve when they come together with purpose and empathy.” She emphasised that the initiative reflects the College’s Mercy values and its commitment to supporting vital cancer research.n
Community Involvement and Supportn
The event will include several fundraising activities, such as a bake sale, engaging the broader community to support the cause. Asha, a Year 12 student, encouraged others by saying, “Even a small action can make a real difference. It’s the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and stand with those affected by cancer.”n
In the lead-up to the event, students have undertaken extensive fundraising efforts, both individually and collectively. These initiatives have contributed to the remarkable fundraising total and reflect the students’ dedication to making a meaningful difference.n
